As a student throughout grades K-12, I began being introduced to the basic functions of MS Word for essays, projects, and crafts (brochures, newsletters, etc.) I prefer using MS Word because it is the easiest software that I know how to use due to familiarity and having a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 laptop. The updates to this software are also easily adaptable and I learn something new from this software when completing research tasks for my DIS. I am a "ride or die" for MS Word.
I think the most useful and pivotal ISTE Standard for Educators is: Collaboration. Because this word means to have the ability or intention of working with others, in the context of ISTE Standard for Educators, it requires students and teachers to collaborate together which strengthens the relationships between peers and their teacher in the classroom through online tasks. A teacher must be able to lead their students to understanding and comprehension of online software and its use. This collaboration is very important in regards to the success these students will have with technology and its use in the future.
I do agree with the label "digital native" for today's youth because, technology is always evolving and catering to all ages. Therefore, the younger generations being born into today's technology will be growing up with the development of the future's technology use. To be a digital native is to be born into or accustomed to technology and its changes. As a digital native, I have noticed some differences between my generation and most of my teachers (digital immigrants) use of technology. Although the digital immigrants use technology and are accustomed to it, there seems to be a lack of adaptation from their side because of how often software, programs, websites, apps, etc., evolve or "update". This can create a disparity between teachers and their use of technology to teach children and this lack of adaptation can be taught or learned when teachers give up or refuse to change with the times. As digital natives grow and teach the future generations, we may become "digital immigrants" ourselves with the inability to change with the updates of technology.
Hi Dev!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about having a "ride or die" mindset when it comes to using MS Word. I have always worked on MS Word for every writing assignment in middle school and high school.
I like your definition of digital native as you highlight that digital natives can either be born or be accustom to technology changes. I also like the idea that our generation as Digital Natives may turn in a Digital Immigrant generation in the future, and it is a key insight for how future generations may be affect as the new Digital Natives.
